Sobre las 23.20 (21.20 GMT), un tren regional embistió a un camión de matrícula lituana que quedó parado en un paso a nivel con el semáforo ya en rojo cerca de Arè, en el municipio de Caluso.
El maquinista habría activado el freno de emergencia, pero no pudo evitar el impacto, tan violento que la locomotora descarriló arrastrando dos de los tres vagones y tumbando varios postes eléctricos.
El conductor del tren murió en el lugar; otra persona falleció en un hospital de Turín. Entre los heridos hay por lo menos uno muy grave.
A bordo del tren, el último del día en esa ruta, viajaban entre 40 y 50 pasajeros, muchos de los cuales quedaron atrapados, según el jefe provincial de los carabineros, Emanuele De Santis, citado por RAI.
