Un camión atropelló en la noche del jueves a una multitud en la ciudad francesa de Niza, dejando un saldo de más de 75 muertos, informó el alcalde de la ciudad, Christian Estrosi.

El número de muertos en el atropello de una multitud por un camión en Niza aumentó hasta 77, señaló en la madrugada de este viernes el alcalde de la ciudad francesa, Christian Estrosi, al calificar lo ocurrido como un 'atentado'.

El diputado Éric Ciotti, habla de "75 muertos y 15 heridos en grave estado de salud". Según el subprefecto de los Alpes Marítimos, Sébastien Humbert, citado por BFMTV, el ataque provocó también un centenar de heridos.

El camión usado en el ataque anduvo más de dos kilómetros, informó la procuraduría local. Según medios locales, el conductor abrió fuego contra la multitud tras salir del vehículo. También se informa que el conductor del camión era una persona procedente de Túnez y residente en Niza.

En el camión que arrolló a decenas de personas fueron encontradas armas de fuego y granadas, confirmó Christian Estrosi, alcalde de la ciudad. Además, "el conductor le disparó a la multitud, de acuerdo al policía que lo mató", dijo Estrosi a la televisora BFM TV, y subrayo que el camión era conducido por una persona con "un comportamiento completamente premeditado".

​"Aún no se puede calificar el suceso como un acto terrorista— aseguró Jean-Michel Prêtre, fiscal de Niza—. Pero al mismo tiempo todo parece indicar que esa versión es la más plausible" 

"Se trata de la peor tragedia en la historia de Niza (…)", escribió en Twitter Christian Estrosi, alcalde de Niza.

"El horror en Niza", se lee en la primera página de la edición especial de Le Parisien, principal diario de París.

​El trágico suceso tuvo lugar hacia las 22.30 locales (20.30 GMT) en el Paseo de los Ingleses durante unos fuegos artificiales con motivo de la Toma de la Bastilla, la fiesta nacional que se celebra en Francia el 14 de julio; el conductor del camión fue abatido en un tiroteo con policías.

El alcalde de la ciudad, Christian Estrosi, se encuentra reunido con su equipo, supervisando lo ocurrido.

El expresidente Sarkozy expresó su "infinita tristeza" y su "solidaridad" con los habitantes de Niza en su cuenta de Twitter.
